Norman Manson Walker was born on the 29th July 1909 in Colac Victoria, Australia.
​
Walker joined the Australian Territorial Army as a probationary Lieutenant with the 57/60 Bn on the 23rd July 1934 and rose through the ranks to Temp Major before getting called up for full time duty 31st July 1941. He served with HQ S Command in Melbourne until 29 June 1942 when he re-joined the 57/60 Bn HQ. On the 20th February 1943 he transferred to the 24th Bn and on the 23rd February the Bn embarked from Brisbane on board the "Duntroon" arriving in Papua New Guinea on the 1st March.
